Japan Weather
The climate of Japan is predominately temperate, but there is significant
variation between the islands that make up the country:
- Hokkaido - The northern most part of Japan, this region experiences long cold Winters with deep snow, and cool Summers.
- Sea of Japan - Like Hokkaido, the western regions of Honshu, experience cold winters with heavy
snowfall. Summers are mostly cool, but there can occasionally be very hot days because of warm
dry winds descending from the mountains ("föhn winds").
- Seto Inland Sea - This is the body of water separating
Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. It is sheltered from winds by the Chugoku and Shikoku mountains, and thus
experiences a moderate climate.
- Central Highlands - This region experience a typicals
- East Coast - The Pacific Coast region of Japan experiences cold Winters, but
with little snow. Summers are generally hot and humid.
- The Ryukyu Islands (Nansei Islands), lie to the Southwest of the main Japanese islands, have a subtropical
climate with warm Winters and hot Summers. There is a lot of rainfall, and typhoons are commonplace.
