Product Description:
The roots of Japanese haiku reach back over a thousand years. In the Japanese haiku poem, as in life, there is a pause, a shift, in which the poet celebrates sensory awareness of the season, perhaps suggested by the scent of red plum blossoms or the silence of snow-covered tree limbs. The timeless appeal of this understated poetic form may be the human desire to capture one's impressions of a fleeting moment. Such seasonal allusions emphasize the essence of haiku: nature and its ephemeral beauty. This calendar features twelve haiku paired with reproductions of exquisite Japanese woodcuts from the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Each poem is rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation. Pomegranate also publishes the books Shin Hanga: The New Print Movement of Japan, by Barry Till, and Haiku: Japanese Art and Poetry, by Judith Patt, Michiko Warkentyne, and Barry Till. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC(R) certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council(TM) and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. FSC certification promotes responsible forest management by ensuring that forestry practices are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable. Product Description:
The early modern prints of Kawase Hasui and Ohara Sh son, two of the finest artists of the shin hanga, or new prints, movement, were significant to reviving Japan s woodblock print industry after the devastating Kant earthquake of 1923. Like Hasui s home, publisher Watanabe Sh zabur s business was destroyed in the ensuing fire, as were hundreds of existing woodblocks stored there. Sh zabur quickly reopened his print shop and encouraged Hasui, Sh son, and other shin hanga artists to create new works that blended Western aesthetics with traditional subjects of Japanese art. The prints were popular in the United States, and a landmark exhibition in 1930 at the Toledo Museum of Art brought together more than three hundred of these new prints. Many of the thirty-two works reproduced here were part of the original exhibition, and all are now in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art.

All of Pomegranate s calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC® certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. Product Description:
Japanese scroll and screen paintings executed in ink, colors (mineral pigments), and sometimes gold leaf or gold paint on silk or paper reveal a variety of influences, among them Chinese painting and calligraphy, Buddhist iconography, and Japanese literature. Some scrolls are narrative, recounting their stories when unrolled from right to left. Others are made to be unrolled vertically and hung on the wall, their subjects ranging from portraits to scenes from mythology, scripture, nature, and everyday life. Folding screens, like many other products of the Japanese aesthetic, are both beautiful and practical. Being portable, they can be used in adapting spaces inside a traditional Japanese home.

The twelve elegant scrolls and screens reproduced in this calendar date from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century. All are from the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art.

All of Pomegranate s calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC® certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM and manufactured by an FSC certified printer.
